The information on this page is not mandatory, however it is strongly recommended that student pilots follow the procedures outlined below in order to enhance safety.
Northwest Practice Areas
The ILS 12L at VGT has caused concern for safety of operations among the flight schools in Las Vegas as well as operation by individual pilots flying into the Northwest area between the military restricted areas east of Highway 95 and Mount Charleston mountain ranges. The following information is presented to all those who fly in this area as an information to enhance safety. WARNING: The Northwest Practice Area lies in A-481 and is a frequent corridor for high speed military traffic flying in and out of Nellis Air Force Base.
All aircraft who are not communicating with Nellis Control, should be on 122.75 and transmitting in the blind altitude and location (over the houses, over Kyle Canyon Road, over the retention basin, etc.). Additionally, the transmission should include the Area – Alpha, Bravo or Charlie.
REMEMBER THIS IS A VERY BUSY AREA, SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT, CHECK OUTSIDE REGULARLY, COMMUNICATE YOUR POSITION, AND MONITOR THE ILS FREQUENCY IF POSSIBLE.
ALPHA AREA -- Kyle Canyon Road and Highway 95 to the first bend (northwest) then along the northern ridge line to the LAS R-300, then to the southern ridge line and return to Highway 95 and Kyle Canyon Road intersection. ALPHA is the most critical of the three areas, due to the potential conflict with the ILS 12L traffic at KVGT. All flight training operations should be conducted below 4,500 feet MSL to stay below the ILS flight path. The ALPHA AREA is shown above in red markings.
BRAVO AREA -- LAS R-300 and the southern edge of the practice area, then southwest along the ridg line to the west, continue along the western ridge line to the northern ridge line, to the LAS R-300. No altitude restrictions. Area shown above in blue markings.
CHARLIE AREA -- All areas north of ALPHA AND BRAVO and west of Highway 95. Note: Creech Air Force Base Class D airspace. The Thunderbirds often have this area NOTAM'd for airshow practice. Maintain 1,000' AGL or higher over prison complex. No other altitude restrictions.
Southwest Practice Areas
Currently, Monarch Sky is the only flight school that operates out of Henderson Executive airport and hence, we are the primary user of the southwest practice area, though traffic from Jean and Boulder City sometimes executes maneuvers in this area. See a flight instructor for information regarding the southwest practice area.
